Postgame Update:
No need for brooms. This game was all about missed opportunities for the Pirates. In the 1st, 3rd, and 5th innings, Nyjer Morgan and Freddy Sanchez both got on base (1st and 3rd with no outs, 5th with 1 out), and Nate McLouth couldn’t help more than a walk in the 5th, and those on-base efforts led to no runs. In the 4th inning, the Pirates got four consecutive hits, but they led to just one run because of a baserunning error by Robinzon Diaz.

The Pirates outhit the Cardinals 12-10, but the Bucs left 10 men on base. Final score: Cardinals 5 – Pirates 1.

Joel Pineiro (4-2, 3.66) @ Ross Ohlendorf (3-3, 4.14), 7:05 P.M., PNC Park

Postgame Update:
There was a lot to feel good about in Pittsburgh last night. The Penguins destroyed the Capitals 6-2 in Game 7 of their Stanley Cup playoff series. The Pirates beat the Cardinals 5-2 and started a much-needed winning streak.

Ross Ohlendorf pitched another nice game (6IP, 2H, 1R, 5K). Pirate pitchers allowed 0 walks tonight. Matt Capps entered the game with a bit of a jam in the 9th (runners on 1st and 2nd, 1 out, 4 run lead). He allowed an Albert Pujols RBI single, but then he got Chris Duncan to ground into a double play for the save.

Jack Wilson found himself at the plate tonight. He was 3-4 with an RBI double. Like I said yesterday, it’s great having him healthy again.

Adam LaRoche hit a “home run” in the 1st that was reviewed with video replay. Replay showed that the home run hit the railing and did not clear the park. The call was overturned, and LaRoche was given an RBI double. That’s the first time that video overturned a call in PNC Park history.

Finally, in non-Pirate news, Nationals’ Ryan Zimmerman had a 30 game hitting streak going into last night. Unfortunately, he failed to record a hit against Barry Zito and the San Francisco Giants. Zimmerman spent a few months with the Harrisburg Senators on his way up to the big leagues, so I’m a fan of his. I hope he starts a new streak tomorrow (but hopefully he doesn’t hurt us too bad in our 4 game series with the Nats next week!).

Well, we’ve got a winning streak, and we’ve guaranteed a series win against the Cardinals! We’ll be reaching for the brooms tonight.

Go Bucs!

Todd Wellemeyer (3-2, 4.75) @ Zach Duke (3-3, 2.79), 7:05 P.M., PNC Park

I’ll be at Camden Yards, watching the O’s vs. the Rays.

Post Game Update:
I could hardly believe my eyes as the out-of-town scoreboard in Camden Yards kept updating. Thanks to 8 strong innings from Zach Duke, the Pirates beat the Cards 7-1. Through 7 games, Duke’s ERA is 2.52. Good stuff!

The Pirates got home runs from Adam LaRoche and Brandon Moss, two players who have been struggling as of recent. Hopefully, they’re starting to turn the corner.

Jack Wilson is back! Even though he went 0-4 tonight, he was part of a nice double play, and it feels really good to have him back on the field.

Currently, the biggest cause for concern is Matt Capps. He came in for the 9th inning and loaded the bases with no outs. He escaped the inning and didn’t allow any runs, but now his last 4 performances have been shaky.

April 24 – Flyout, Walk, Popout, Walk, Single – 1 run
May 2 – Single, Single, Single, Single, Flyout, K, Single, K – 2 runs
May 4 – Single, Single, Walk, SacFly, HR, K, Flyout – 4 runs
May 12 – Single, Walk, Walk, K, K, Flyout – 0 runs

Ready or not, Game 2 of our series with the Cardinals is a day game.

Ross Ohlendorf (3-2, 3.48) @ Todd Wellemeyer (2-2, 5.28), 1:40 P.M., Busch Stadium

Compare today’s starting lineup with the Opening Day lineup.
Today: McLouth, Young, Monroe, Hinske, Moss, An. LaRoche, Diaz, Bixler
Opening Day: Morgan, Sanchez, McLouth, Doumit, LaRoche, LaRoche, Moss, Wilson
Obviously, injuries have played some role in these changes. I’m also guessing that John Russell is trying anything that might help to end this losing skid.

The Pirates only managed 4 hits in the game. Robinzon Diaz went 2 for 3, including a solo homer. The Bucs have now lost 5 in a row.

After a disappointing home-stand against the Reds and Brewers, the Pirates travel to St. Louis to take on the division leading Cardinals. At 17-10, the Cardinals have one of the best records in baseball, but the Pirates managed a 2-2 split with them in their season-opening series.

Tonight, we’ll see: Zach Duke (3-2, 2.21) @ Mitchell Boggs (1-0, 3.29)

Delwyn Young will be starting in right field.

Post Game Update:
Given the current state of the Pirates’ offense, it tough to win many games. Pirate hitting was too few and far between, and the Pirates lost to the Cardinals 4-2. That’s their 8th loss in 9 games. (I guess I need to be in attendance more often!)

Tonight wasn’t Zach Duke’s best outing, but he still left the game in a manageable condition. Sean Burnett continued to be the strongest member of the Bucs’ bullpen, pitching 2 and 1/3 strong innings.

Albert Pujols was nasty, as always, going 4-4 including a 1st inning homer.

Our offense needs a jump-start.

The Pirates are 12-12, but they have a tough road ahead. Their next 10 are against the Brewers, Cardinals, and Mets.

The Brewers put their 15 game winning streak against the Bucs on the line tonight.

It should be a good pitchers’ duel with Yovani Gallardo @ Paul Maholm, 7:05 P.M. at PNC Park.

Ryan Braun will not be playing tonight because he will be having an MRI on his back.

Last week, Jeff Karstens hit Braun in the back with a pitch. Braun thought it was an intentional beaning, and Karstens was fined by MLB for the pitch. Karstens has appealed.

Today, John Russell said, “We haven’t thought about it. Obviously they said a few things about it. Our guy got fined. They hit three guys the next day. So I wouldn’t think there’s anything on their side. We obviously don’t want to make a big issue of it. We just want to go out and play baseball. I would think it should be over.”

Pirates @ Cardinals – 1:35 P.M.
Ross Ohlendorf vs. Chris Carpenter

1:45 – Both LaRoches are out of the starting lineup today. Apparently, Adam has the flu. Andy is still benched after 2 poor games. Hopefully the Pirates remember that those were only two games. I wouldn’t mind seeing Andy getting back into the lineup.

3:00 – It’s never easy following baseball from work, but thankfully MLB.com’s GameDay makes it a little easier. The Pirates lead 1-0 in the fifth despite Carpenter throwing a no-hitter. A 2nd inning Pujols error helped Ramon Vazquez (who walked) get around the bases.

3:25 – With two outs in the 7th, Vazquez broke up Chris Carpenter’s no hitter. Still 1-0 Pirates.

3:57 – And now the lead is gone too. Four straight Cardinals’ singles made the score 2-1 Cards. Just like that… we’re 3 outs away from defeat. Maybe we’ll have some more Opening Day magic in store?

4:12 – That’s the end of a tough 2-1 loss. The Cards deserved this game though, with 8 hits, and only 1 for the Pirates. Still, I’m happy to split the opening series in St. Louis… on to Cincy!
