Post Game Updates
Technically, the Pirates were going for a 4 game sweep against the New York Mets today (make up game). It was back and forth all day, and the Pirates lost a heartbreaker. After leading 5-0 after 3 innings, the Bucs allowed the Mets back into the game, and the Mets led 8-5 after 6. Down 8-6 in the bottom of the ninth, Freddy Sanchez singled and Adam LaRoche homered to the game as the PNC Park crowd exploded. With 2 outs in the bottom of the ninth, Robinzon Diaz and Ramon Vazquez singled, but Brandon Moss couldn’t knock in the game winner.

Matt Capps entered in the top of the 10th, and allowed a 2-out hit-by-pitch, stolen base, and single to give up the lead.

The Pirates’ top of the order couldn’t produce anything in the bottom of the 10th.

Today was the first time we’ve seen Jeff Salazar in a Pirates’ uniform. He was recalled after the Morgan/Hinske trades. He entered as a pinch-hitter in the bottom of the 6th, and he flew out to right.

Virgil Vasquez gave up 7 hits and 3 ER in 6 innings, and that was more than the Pirate offense could muster. The Bucs scored just 1 run on 6 hits in tonight’s rubber match against the Cubs.

Tonight was the first we saw Joel Hanrahan in a Bucco uniform. He pitched well in 1 inning of work.

Garrett Jones also made his first appearance since being recalled from AAA following the Morgan/Hinske trades. He went 0-4.

Craig Monroe was designated for assignment, and Steven Pearce was recalled from AAA-Indianapolis. Charlie Morton gives his “1st” start for the Pirates a 2nd chance. He takes the mound against Jason Hammel, tonight at 8:10 at Coors Field.

Tonight’s loss to the Rockies is very very frustrating.

Down 4-2 after 6 innings, the Pirates got a 4 runs 7th, and they added a run in the 8th to take a 7-4 lead.

The bullpen couldn’t hold it, and the Rockies scored 3 in the 8th and 2 in the 9th to finish a 9-7 victory.

Charlie Morton did his job, holding the Rockies to 2 runs after 5. Sean Burnett didn’t pitch well in the 6th, but Pirate batters bailed him out in the 7th. John Grabow was a disaster in the 8th, and Jesse Chavez was no better in the 9th.

Nyjer Morgan was 4-5 with a run and an RBI. McCutchen was 1-5 with a run and 3 RBI. Brandon Moss went 3-4.

Paul Maholm and Javier Vazquez were locked in a pitchers’ duel. The two combined for 21 strikeouts.

Delwyn Young hit his first home run as a Pirate to tie the game at 1. Young’s homered finally ended the Pirates’ homerless streak of 323 plate appearances.

After having a tough day, Andrew McCutchen came up big in the 9th by hitting a leadoff single. Nyjer Morgan sacrificed him to 2nd. Freddy Sanchez grounded out to move him to 3rd. Bobby Cox then made the surprising move of intentionally walking Adam LaRoche to pitch to hotter-hitting brother Andy. Andy poked a single up the middle to score McCutchen and brother Adam to take the lead.

Big Bull Rider Matt Capps shut things down in the 9th.

It feels good to leave Atlanta with a split.

Post Game Update

The Pirates dropped their second 1-run game in a row to the Atlanta Braves. Ross Ohlendorf pitched well, but it wasn’t enough for the Pirates to get the W.

The Pirates scored early in the 1st inning when speedy Nyjer Morgan singled. Delwyn Young hit him over to 3rd, and Morgan scored on an Adam LaRoche groundout.

The Braves put some singles together in the bottom of the 3rd to score Nate McLouth and tie the game at 1.

Delwyn Young singled in the 4th, Eric Hinske walked, and Robinzon Diaz doubled to send them both home. 3-1 Bucs!

The lead lasted until the bottom of the 7th when Jesse Chavez gave up a 2 run single to Yunel Escobar.

This was the 2nd tough loss in a row for the Bucs.
