Post Game Updates
Technically, the Pirates were going for a 4 game sweep against the New York Mets today (make up game). It was back and forth all day, and the Pirates lost a heartbreaker. After leading 5-0 after 3 innings, the Bucs allowed the Mets back into the game, and the Mets led 8-5 after 6. Down 8-6 in the bottom of the ninth, Freddy Sanchez singled and Adam LaRoche homered to the game as the PNC Park crowd exploded. With 2 outs in the bottom of the ninth, Robinzon Diaz and Ramon Vazquez singled, but Brandon Moss couldn’t knock in the game winner.

Matt Capps entered in the top of the 10th, and allowed a 2-out hit-by-pitch, stolen base, and single to give up the lead.

The Pirates’ top of the order couldn’t produce anything in the bottom of the 10th.

Today was the first time we’ve seen Jeff Salazar in a Pirates’ uniform. He was recalled after the Morgan/Hinske trades. He entered as a pinch-hitter in the bottom of the 6th, and he flew out to right.

Given the trades that took place today, I did not expect the Pirates to play well in tonight’s game, but all in all, this was probably one of the best games the Pirates played all season.

Ross Ohlendorf was fantastic, striking out 8 and allowing just 4 hits in 7 innings. Grabow and Capps sealed the deal.

Freddy Sanchez went 3-3 with an RBI.

Ross Ohlendorf outpitched Cliff Lee in tonight’s rubber-match against the Cleveland Indians. Ohlendorf allowed just 2 runs on 5 hits in 7 innings. John Grabow and Matt Capps closed things out.

Andrew McCutchen was strong once again at the plate, going 2-4 with 2 RBI and a run. Jack Wilson went 3-3.

The Pirates opened their 3 game series in Colorado tonight. The Rockies are hot under the direction of their new manager Jim Tracy (yes, we all remember him).

The Pirates’ offense was wimpy, but Jack Wilson hit a solo HR in the 7th. Eric Hinske and Andrew McCutchen knocked in two after-the-fact runs in the top of the 9th.

Ross Ohlendorf wasn’t sharp, surrendering 6 runs on 9 hits in 5 innings. Burnett and Meek pitched well. Matt Capps got an inning of work in the 8th, and he gave up a hit and a run.

The Stanley Cup is coming to PNC Park today, and Bill Guerin is throwing out the first pitch.

Tonight’s game was interesting. It was old-school night at PNC Park. This year marks the 100 year anniversary of the Pirates defeating the Tigers in the World Series. Everything at PNC Park was imitated to make it look more like 1909. Baggy uniforms, no mascots, and a plain looking scoreboard made for a unique night at the park.

Ross Ohlendorf pitched 6 nice innings to get the win in today’s rubber match. Grabow and Capps pitched well to close out the 8th and 9th.

Andrew McCutchen went 2-3 with 2 runs. Freddy Sanchez went 2-4 with 2 runs. Delwyn Young went 3-4 with a run.

Paul Maholm and Javier Vazquez were locked in a pitchers’ duel. The two combined for 21 strikeouts.

Delwyn Young hit his first home run as a Pirate to tie the game at 1. Young’s homered finally ended the Pirates’ homerless streak of 323 plate appearances.

After having a tough day, Andrew McCutchen came up big in the 9th by hitting a leadoff single. Nyjer Morgan sacrificed him to 2nd. Freddy Sanchez grounded out to move him to 3rd. Bobby Cox then made the surprising move of intentionally walking Adam LaRoche to pitch to hotter-hitting brother Andy. Andy poked a single up the middle to score McCutchen and brother Adam to take the lead.

Big Bull Rider Matt Capps shut things down in the 9th.

It feels good to leave Atlanta with a split.

Roy Oswalt took to the mound for the Astros tonight. Again, it seems the better team or the better the pitcher the Pirates face, the better they can hit. The Pirates also finally provided some run support for Paul Maholm who got his 4th win of the season.

The Pirates scored all 6 of their runs in the 2nd and 3rd innings. Paul Maholm hit a single with the bases loaded in the 2nd to score Andy LaRoche. Andrew McCutchen followed with a 2 RBI single to score Brandon Moss and Jason Jaramillo. In the 3rd inning, the LaRoche brothers each singled, followed by a Brandon Moss double. Jaramillo hit an RBI ground out, and Jack Wilson followed with an RBI double.

John Grabow and Matt Capps looked good in the 8th and 9th, respectively. Hopefully their troubles are behind them, and we can count on them to close out games night-in and night-out.

Tonight’s game was a nice pitchers’ duel, with Johan Santana facing Zach Duke. Jason Jaramillo hit his first career home run to get the Pirates on the board. Later, Freddy Sanchez singled, followed by back-to-back doubles by Nate McLouth and Andy LaRoche to give the Pirates the lead.

John Grabow and Matt Capps did a nice job of keeping Mets off the bases in the 8th and 9th innings.

Of interest, Nyjer Morgan was thrown out of the game for arguing a call at first base and throwing his batting helmet. Replay would later show that Morgan was indeed safe at first.

Over the first 3 innings, Ian Snell provided a lot more of the same… bad pitching. The Bucs found themselves in a 5-0 hole after 3 frames.

He managed to get things together, and the Pirate bats came alive. An Andy LaRoche triple knocked in 2 runs, and LaRoche later scored to make the score 5-3.

The Pirates exploded again in the bottom of the 8th and scored 5 runs thanks to an Adam LaRoche double followed by four consecutive singles from Andy LaRoche, Jaramillo, Wilson, and Young.

Matt Capps entered for the 9th inning and shut things down. It turned out to be a nice 8-5 win for the black and gold.
