Post Game Update

Zach Duke didn’t have a strong start tonight. He gave up 11 hits and 6 runs in 6 innings. Still the Pirates managed to score 2 runs in the 6th thanks to triples from Andrew McCutchen and Freddy Sanchez. Nyjer Morgan and Adam LaRoche each hit sacrifice flies to score McCutchen and Sanchez. Jaramillo, Wilson, Hinske, and McCutchen hit four consecutive hits in the 7th to score 3 runs and tie the game.

The Pirate bullpen pitched remarkably well in innings 7 through 14. Tom Gorzelanny, John Grabow, Sean Burnett, Steven Jackson, Jesse Chavez, and Evan Meek (3 innings!) all kept the Bucs in the game. Jeff Karstens entered for the bottom of the 15th inning, and he surrendered 2 walks and 2 hits, and Matt Diaz knocked in the winning run.

This was a tough loss for the Pirates tonight. Bobby Cox got his 2,000th win as a Braves manager. Nate McLouth hit a HR in his first game against the Pirates. Luckily, Andrew McCutchen is playing great, although is defense could use some work.

Since Karstens came into the game in relief tonight, we may see Charlie Morton enter the starting rotation soon.

Tonight’s game also brought up a minor bug in my scoresheet. I’ve known that there is currently a serious limitation in the scoresheet. Each team can only have 63 plate appearances. As I finished the scoresheet, I breathed a sigh of relief when the Pirates finished with 62 plate appearances and the Braves finished with 63. The minor bug occurred when a team had exactly 63 plate appearances. I’ll post an update shortly.

Post Game Update

Since today’s game was at 12:35, and the Penguins played at 8:00, I decided to take the day off and spend the day in Pittsburgh. Lucky for me, I got to see Andrew McCutchen’s MLB debut, and he looked good! McCutchen batted in the leadoff spot, and Nyjer Morgan batted second, essentially giving the Pirates two leadoff hitters. The two leadoff 4 of the 8 innings this afternoon. McCutchen was 2-4 with a walk and 3 runs. Nyjer was 2-4 with a run. Ramon Vazquez was playing SS today because Jack Wilson was out with the stomach flu. Vazquez was impressive, going 4-4 with 4 singles and a run.

Ross Ohlendorf didn’t look sharp, only going 4.1 innings, while giving up 9 hits and 5 runs. Tom Gorzelanny looked good as he came in to finish off the 5th. Steven Jackson gave 2 innings of excellent relief effort.

Today was a fun game to watch. Even with McLouth gone, we looked like a good baseball team. I love McCutchen and Morgan batting 1-2 (although I was expecting to see Morgan-McCutchen). We’re only 3 games under .500 with a series at Houston. Hopefully we can win this one!

I mean, we have to take this personally. It can’t happen. It can’t happen, us being able to come here and lose three games just like that. Three games to this team. I know they’re a big-league ball club, but we’re better than them.”

Tonight’s game was a nice pitchers’ duel, with Johan Santana facing Zach Duke. Jason Jaramillo hit his first career home run to get the Pirates on the board. Later, Freddy Sanchez singled, followed by back-to-back doubles by Nate McLouth and Andy LaRoche to give the Pirates the lead.

John Grabow and Matt Capps did a nice job of keeping Mets off the bases in the 8th and 9th innings.

Of interest, Nyjer Morgan was thrown out of the game for arguing a call at first base and throwing his batting helmet. Replay would later show that Morgan was indeed safe at first.

A wild event in yesterday’s Pirates’ game prompted the release of Version 2C of my Retrosheet Scoresheet.

Carlos Zambrano was pitching to Nate McLouth in the 7th inning, and he threw a wild pitch, allowing Nyjer Morgan to score from 3rd. Zambrano argued and was ejected. Angel Guzman entered to replace Zambrano, and continue pitching to Nate McLouth.

In this situation, you can place a “P” (for “P”ost “P”replay) in the BA column. This isn’t a perfect fix, as I haven’t considered a complex combination of “P”, “B”, and “A” codes… but this should cover 99.9% of games.

Post Game Update

Locked in a pitchers’ dual, the Pirates trailed the Cubs 2-1 in the 7th. Nyjer Morgan singled, but advanced to 3rd on Alfonso Soriano’s error. Carlos Zambrano threw a wild pitch, scoring Morgan. Zambrado did not agree. He exploded in anger, was ejected by the home plate umpire, and he ended his day by destroying a Gatorade machine in the dugout with his bat.

Still, it wasn’t enough for the Bucs to get the series win in Chicago. Reed Johnson homered in the bottom of the 8th, and that was enough. Cubs won 5-2.

The game did reveal a weakness in my Retrosheet scoresheet. Version 2b was unable to handle a substitution following a preplay event. I will post version 2c this afternoon.

16 hits, including 3 when the Pirates were down to their last out helped the Pirates get a win against the Chicago White Sox. Down 1, with 2 outs in the ninth, Jack Wilson hit a home run to tie the game. Nyjer Morgan followed with a double and Delwyn Young knocked him in to score the go-ahead run. Matt Capps finally showed some command, striking out the side in the bottom of the ninth. Hopefully Joe Kerrigan’s adjustments are starting to make a difference.

The Bucs made some bone-headed base-running mistakes, but I’ll take the win.

Andy LaRoche homered in the 3rd inning, but then the Pirates got no base runners until the 9th inning. Some clutch hitting in the 10th by Adam LaRoche and Brandon Moss helped the Pirates walk away with another victory from the Nationals.

I really thought today was going to be the day. Coming into the game, we had lost 7 in a row and 11 of the last 12. I thought we had a favorable pitching matchup (Ian Snell @ Livan Hernandez). We were swinging pink bats on Mother’s Day. We even got a 2-0 after 3 innings.

In the first inning, Nyjer Morgan singled and stole 2nd. A Delwyn Young single and a Nate McLouth sac fly brought him in. In the second inning, McLouth doubled and a Robinzon Diaz single brought him in.

Not surprisingly, it fell apart.

The Mets put some hits together in the bottom of the 4th to score 3 runs. Ian Snell left the game after 6 innings with the Pirates trailing 3-2. Sean Burnett came in and a Brian Bixler error at shortstop allowed the 7th inning to go longer than it should have and the Mets added another. John Grabow came in for the 8th inning and gave up 3 more runs.

Nate McLouth added an after-the-fact 2 run homer in the 9th.

Final Score: Mets 8, Pirates 4

We know we won’t lose tomorrow. Thankfully, the Bucs have the day off.

Jack Wilson played a AAA game on Saturday. He went 1 for 3 with an RBI double, and he started a double play for the Indianapolis Indians. He should be back in the starting lineup for Tuesday’s game against the Cardinals. It’s a good thing because we need him in the lineup badly. This season, Brian Bixler has had 25 at bats and 18 strikeouts. He’s committed 2 errors in 8 games.
